RÂŞCA
MONASTERY. In
the valley of the river with the same name, Petru Rares built in 1542 a
small church with lavishly gilded frescoes; between 1611-1617, minister
of the interior Costea Bacioc added to the building an impressive
exonarthex, considerably enlarging the whole structure.
The iconographic and composition plan retains the
original features especially in the shrine (St. Nicholas) and in the
nave (Multiplying the Loaves of Bread). Remarkable is the Votive
Picture (the ruler's family).
The exterior painting produced by Stamatello
Cotronas (1552) has been relatively well preserved on the southern
facade (The Ladder of John Climax, The Final Judgement, St. Anthony's
Life).
There are old icons in the church, as well as
tombstones (15th-16th centuries).
