PUTNA MONASTERY.  Putna was one of the first churches, which Stephen the Great had built in Moldavia and it was designed as his family mausoleum. The original church was built between 1466-1470 but it was destroyed by fire soon afterwards and its replacement has not survived either. The present building dates from the mid 17th century although it is said to be a close copy of the original. In any case it is a lovely church and is included on UNESCO's list of world heritage monuments.
Legend says that the rebuilding happened in order to find Stephen's treasure. Under Stephen's patronage, Putna Monastery became a great cultural center. The monks who worked here created wonderful illuminated manuscripts and embroidery, and they founded a highly respected school of liturgical music. About 1.5 km from Putna monastery is Daniil Sihastru's cell. Daniil was Stephen the Great's confessor.
There is a tiny church here, carved in the stone, and the cell is underneath it. According to the laws of the Orthodox Church, women are not allowed inside.
