MOLDOVITA MONASTERY.
The church of Moldavita
monastery is larger than the Voronet or Humor monasteries; it was built
in 1532 and painted in 1537. The outside walls are clad in frescoes.
From the eaves
down to the base in registers, there are hundreds of scenes and
personages. In the open porch there is the 'Last Judgment", a scene
less dramatic than the one at Voronet and in the Southern facade there
predominate the "Prayer to the Virgin" and "Jesse's Tree" painted
against a dark blue background.
One of the most
valuable scenes at Moldovita is the siege of Constantinople, a
monumental composition. It seems the siege of Constantinople, has been
painted only in Moldavia. This historical event was so deeply stamped
on the memory of the people that even lifter one hundred years it was
still alive in people's minds. The Moldavian artist rendered a
panoramic view of Constantinople, as a citadel with numerous towers,
and with the entire bustle existing during such a siege. In the
monastery there is still 16th century furniture engraved and colored
with folk art motifs, used in pennant nothings. The princely chair of
Petru Rares with a back 2 meters high is a synthesis of Moldavia's 16th
century ornamental art.
There can also be
seen the "Pomme d'Or" prize awarded to Bucovina by FIJET (1925).
