HUMOR MONASTERY.   Painted on the outside from the eaves down to the foundations, Humor monastery (6 km from the locality Gura Humorului) looks like a page of a manuscript covered with miniatures, left-lying on a lawn.
Founded by voivode Petru Rares and by chancellor Theodor in 1530, the church is small, with a wide open porch, arched on three sides. The same as the vault at Moldovita, the Humor one seems to be floating, which makes it greatly admired by specialists.
The exterior painting is impressive for its compositions and portraits. The Southern wall displays the composition painted after the poem written by patriarch Serghie of Constantinople and dedicated to the Virgin Mary who saved the city during the attack of the Persians in 626. At Humor this poem, represented in embroideries, miniatures and mediaeval frescoes, has 24 scenes.
Under the images of the poem a historical scene is in the siege of Constantinople, designed to evoke the mediaeval belief in miracle-working icons, and the people's wish to defeat the Turks Hatred for the enemy was so fierce that the hope in a miracle made the painters of Humor and Moldovita paint a defeat of the Turks, instead of a certified historical event.
Humor monastery played an important part in the history of Romanian culture. As early as the 15th century at Humor there was a workshop where miniature painters and calligraphers worked, where a beautiful
Gospel was achieved in which a famous miniature has been preserved, representing Stephen the Great.
