PORUMBESCU.
The
Ciprian Porumbescu group of museums. The
great musician
Ciprian Porumbescu (1853-1883)
was the first Romanian composer who
became really interested in Romanian
folklore and he wrote over 200
works. The group of museums has three sections
comprising Porumbescu's tomb
musician, his birthplace, and The
Ciprian Porumbescu Museum, which
stand a few meters away.
Most of the original notes for his
compositions, his
letters as well as his piano and violin are displayed here.
Porumbescu was especially famous for "Tricolorul", a piece that
was chosen as the national anthem (it
was replaced in 1989), and "The
Ballad", a composition that is full of longing for home. Porumbescu
died
in jail after an unhappy love affair. He is remembered as a staunch
nationalist.
