ARBORE.
Rather
smaller than the other
churches, with a dimly lit pro-naos, a nave with large windows, and no
cupola, because it was not built by a prince but by a boyar only,
Arbore has also preserved external frescoes of unprecedented artistic
beauty.
Unlike Voronet where blue predominates, at Arbore it
is green which is uppermost, a green in 5 shades, combined with red,
blue, yellow, every shade lit up differently,
the far darker tonalities expressing a world of unsuspected
shadows and lights.
The most valuable painting is that on the, Western
Wall and the buttresses. It consists of a succession of small scenes,
like miniatures, unfolding on 8 registers. They are
scenes from the Genesis and fro n the lives of
the saints. The drawing is delicate and lively, the personages are in
motion and the citadels and buildings are seen in perspective. The
personages are lively, graceful; their faces
are glowing with that
delicate pink their
clothes are remarkably elegant. The female saints
move with soft elastic steps Hike ballet dancers.
It is noteworthy that in the courtyard of Arbore
church there I have been preserved (since the period when the church
was painted) two heavy slabs of stone in which 15 small hollows
were cut, to I serve as containers for the mixing of the colors,
proving the great 1 number of shades used by Moldavian painters.
